Cape Town- A fire broke out at a Stellenbosch University men’s residence but no injuries were reported, the institution said on Tuesday.

The fire started in a room on the top floor of one of the units of Helderberg Residence around 18:15 on Monday, said spokesperson Martin Viljoen.

He said three rooms and a part of the roof were damaged and there was also water damage in adjacent rooms.

Students evacuated the building after hearing the fire alarm and firefighters brought the blaze under control.

“Residents were able to remove some of their belongings and study material from the rooms and all indications are that they should be able to prepare for the exams,” he said.

The residence’s vice-president Gawie Gregory said the affected students were studying accounting, actuarial science, engineering and law.

Some were being accommodated in a different section of the off-campus residence in Piet Retief Street.

Viljoen said others had decided to study from home as exams start only next week.

The university’s insurers would initiate a forensic investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
