Cape Town - A fire which broke out on the slopes of Table Mountain on Wednesday morning is under control, officials say.

The blaze started near Deer Park in Vredehoek at about 01:00. Forecasters had warned of a high fire danger, with south-easterly winds gusting from 35-40km/h.

Theo Lane of the City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services told eNCA that the fire had been contained to 25 hectares, and is under control, although there is still smoke in the area.

Residents who had been evacuated from their houses have been allowed to return home.
Fire officials will remain in the area until the blaze has been fully extinguished. About a kilometre of vegetation has been destroyed.

The cause of the fire is unclear.

Tafelberg Road is still open to traffic.
