Johannesburg - KwaZulu-Natal school principals found to have inflated student enrolment must be fired, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) said on Saturday.

"Such misrepresentation of enrolment figures that seeks to defraud the state must be viewed as a criminal act. Those school principals must be held accountable and if found guilty they must be removed from the system," said Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, spoperson on education.

She said the KwaZulu-Natal education department recently found that there were about 200,000 ghost learners in one district.

An investigation into the uThungulu District, by the national and provincial departments, had revealed that pupil numbers had been inflated by 200 000.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa said inflating numbers of pupils has resulted in those schools being allocated staff and funding to which they were not entitled and other deserving schools being deprived.
