Fire razes Cape factories

Cape Town - Several factories were destroyed in a fire in Montague Gardens in Cape Town on Thursday evening.

The fire broke out in a furniture factory in Marconi Beam in Sable Street in the industrial area about 17:00, Andre Basson, manager of a neighbouring factory told News24.

"The fire started in a furniture factory, and was still burning at after 20:00," said Basson, the manager of Auto Atlantic Coach Works.

"The fire quickly spread to neighbouring factories. A warehouse, where we stored accident-damaged vehicles, was completely destroyed. Several cars burnt out."

Basson said he didn't know the extent of the damage. "We can't come near. Firefighters are still in there trying to stop the fire."

A plastics factory, where plastic bags are manufactured, also caught fire and was partly destroyed.

Amanda Chan, the owner of a printer endangered by the fire, said she had just come from the attorneys. "The business was transferred to my name today," she told News24.

Milnerton Police and Blaauwberg Fire Brigade were at the scene trying to stop the flames from spreading to more factories.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire was not known.

Marius says... Two comments - 1) On who ownes the land: Mulder is right and seeing that the black tribes migrating from the north have dispossed the Koi and San, as much as the whites from the South did, I suggest Mr Zuma give the fertile East, the traditional heart land of the black tribes, back to the decendents of the Koi and the San while he is busy redistributing according to moral principals. 2) On land ownership: The ANC is bringing their people under the false impression that (traditional, communial African) land ownership leads to properity - that is absolute rubbish as modern farming is a capital intensive and marginal business; To make money out of farming is not easy. In this day and age individual wealth is created by having a job, to have a job you need a government that manage the affairs of the country well - creating a regulatory environment where entrepeneurs want to invest their money, where goverment spending goes to the best value supplier (and not family or party members), where the goverment service (including the poorly performing teachers) is managed by strict performance measures and where there are consequences for under performance. I think if the ANC had any idea how to govern they would create prosperity for their population, without having to resort to this absurd emotional notion of land ownership that brings prosperity.
