Cape Town - A fire broke out in the Jonkershoek valley near Stellenbosch earlier on Monday.

Around 80 firefighters from various services were deployed to help battle the blaze.

Earlier three helicopters were called in to help douse the fire which has consumed 300ha of fynbos and is now burning in the forest as well. They had to retire due to the poor visibility caused by dense smoke.

The fire line is long and in very difficult terrain.

TimesLive reports the Cape Winelands Fire Department Station Commander Jaco Thuynsma, saying "that no homes or buildings were being threatened, but that it was too early to determine the extent of the fire."

A spokesperson for the Volunteer wildfire Service says members have been deployed to the area to monitor the fire overnight.

On Monday evening the fire spread up the valley away from buildings.
