Johannesburg - Four hundred shacks were destroyed by 17:30 on Saturday, when a fire broke out at Du Noon informal settlement in Milnerton, Cape Town, emergency services said.
Spokesperson Greg Pillay said the fire started shortly after 15:00.
"One person caught up in the blaze was seriously hurt and taken to hospital. The cause of the fire is still unknown," Pillay said.
He said a helicopter and light aircraft were earlier called in, and brought the fire under control.
"Everything is under control now. We will begin dampening off the area in a few minutes."
Two non-profit organisations were to assist those left homeless.
