Kimberley - Fourteen firearms and about 700 rounds of ammunition were handed in at Northern Cape police stations during the first week of an amnesty to surrender all unlawful firearms, police said on Thursday.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Tony Modise said seven members of the public surrendered 14 firearms and the ammunition at four police stations.
The firearms were handed in at Kimberley, Upington, Prieska and Griekwastad and comprised 9mm pistols, revolvers, rifles and ammunition.
"The police welcomes the response of the public in regard the 90 days of amnesty to surrender all unlawful firearms and ammunition," Modise said.
He said they expected that more people would come forward to voluntarily surrender firearms, ammunition and parts of firearms.
Modise said people could visit their nearest police station if they wanted more information about the amnesty period.
