Johannesburg - A young dog had to be put down after a
firecracker exploded in his mouth, seriously injuring him.
The dog’s emotional owner was in tears as she told how
children had thrown a firecracker over the wall and into their garden during
the holidays, reported Beeld.
Tyson, an 18-month-old American pitbull cross, grabbed the firecracker like he always did with a ball before it went off, said Debbie Els.
“Tyson then went to lie under the tree. His tongue was torn, his intestines damaged. He was actually already dead. My husband poured water in his mouth and he lifted his head a little.”
The SPCA was called to the scene and he was put down.
“Tyson was my baby, my child. He was not a dog. Every time I talk about him I cry. I miss him so much,” a tearful Els said, adding that the family had been traumatised by his death.
Some of the children and their parents came to the Els home to ask how they could make up for what had happened.
“But how can you reimburse for a child’s death…you can’t.”
An SPCA official said the dog had been in a lot of pain with
heavy bleeding and had to be put down.
An investigation was launched but no one was charged with
animal cruelty.
