Firefighters contain FS blazes
Johannesburg - Two veld fires that destroyed over 60 000ha of land in the eastern Free State have been contained, Working on Fire said on Monday evening.
The fires broke out on Friday in the Fouriesburg and Rosendal areas, spokesperson Saayman Rossouw told Sapa.
Two helicopters were deployed to the area.
"WoF's Free State fire-fighting teams worked around the clock and additional teams from Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal were called in to assist," he said.
"Dry and windy conditions led to the rapid spreading... but both fires have been contained."
Rossouw said a farm shed was also destroyed in the blaze.
He said low humidity and winds of 10-15km per hour meant that the Fire Danger Index would remain in the orange to red range for the rest of the week.
There was no reported loss of life - human or animal.
