Cape Town - Four firefighters have sustained minor to moderate injuries while attending to the fire at the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve late on Tuesday night.

The firefighters sustained soft tissue injuries after trying to escape one particularly overwhelming fire, ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

The firefighters did not sustain any burn injuries though, Bodasing told News24.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene at around 09:30 and assessed the firefighters.

They were treated and transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

Latest reports indicate that the fire in Jonkershoek flared up overnight and is spreading ‘at an alarming rate'.

The fire is still contained in the Jonkershoek area, but fears of a spread to the Helderberg basin are still prevalent.
