Cape Town - Emergency workers have succeeded in gaining access to the illegal miners trapped in an abandoned gold shaft in Benoni on the East Rand.

Several miners have been brought to the surface, according to ER24.

Some miners are now reluctant to come to the surface for fear of being arrested, ER24 tweeted.

The department for mineral resources says that illegal mining is a crime, and once the miners have received medical attention, they will be arrested.

ER24 says that the miners were taken to a medical station and checked for injuries once they were lifted out of the 1m² hole.

They were arrested after being checked by medical staff by the local police and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.

It still remains unclear whether other miners are trapped in a separate section of the mine.

Once the first group have been brought to the surface, rescue workers will make their way down the shaft to look for other miners.
