2011-06-28 11:47

Johannesburg - A fisherman died after he fell into the sea on the Durban beachfront, paramedics said on Tuesday.

"It is believed that the man was fishing from the pier in front of the Blue Waters hotel when he fell into the sea.

"Exact details to the cause of the incident must still be determined by the police," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

Paramedics and police arrived at the scene at about 04:00 to find the man's body floating in the waves.

"Captain Troy Allison swam out and retrieved the fishermen, tragically he was declared dead by the Netcare paramedics on scene."

I feel for his family, I have fished there and many of the fishermen on the pier are poor unemployed men from Chatsworth township who get up in the early hours rain and shine to feed their families with a fish or two if they're lucky

this is sad, i must admit tho that its a strange world we live in when the people who live and work at the sea dont know how to swim, the peers are a few meters from the shore and durban is not renowned for its strong swells, plus if you swim away from the peer the current will take you right back to the beach, going for a wave and getting stuck on the inside is horrible there! fishermanjoe, i know what you getting at, people think they are hard workers, we have no idea man!
