Johannesburg - Five people died and 14 others were seriously injured on Sunday when their minibus taxi overturned near Balfour in Mpumalanga, the provincial community safety, security and liaison department said.

The minibus overturned on the N3 south near Balfour, on its way to KwaZulu-Natal after the driver lost control, said spokesperson Joseph Mabuza in a statement.

The injured were taken to Heidelberg hospital in Gauteng for further treatment.

The minibus had 19 passengers in it at the time of the accident, with the driver being one of the five people who died.

Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe said the province remained concerned by the high number of road accidents and urged motorists to play their part in reducing road fatalities and injuries.

Shongwe sent messages of condolences to the families affected by the accident and wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.
