Johannesburg - Five men appeared in the Amsterdam Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of murdering a woman who they suspected of practising witchcraft, Mpumalanga police said.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said that around 05:15 on Sunday the five men allegedly broke into the 51-year-old woman's room where she was sleeping at Redcliff just outside Amsterdam.
They then allegedly struck her over the head with an axe.
She died on scene. The five men were arrested on Sunday.
Their case was postponed to December 5 for bail application. The men, aged 18 to 23, were remanded, said Khoabane.
