Johannesburg - Five people have been arrested in connection with a shooting incident at a taxi rank in Tembisa, east of Johannesburg, in which one woman was killed and two others were injured, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

The group, aged between 26 and 41, was arrested at a guest house on Tuesday night, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said. They face murder and attempted murder charges.

Police believe the shooting, which happened on Tuesday morning, was linked to two taxi associations fighting over routes.

Also in Tembisa on Monday, a queue marshal was shot and wounded at Sangweni taxi rank, Dlamini said.

Police responded to the scene and recovered four unlicensed firearms and a vehicle belonging to one of the taxi associations, which had been left abandoned.

Dlamini said the group of five could also be linked to the taxi violence in Olifantsfontein and Woodmead two weeks ago.
