Cape Town - Four men and a woman appeared in the Blue Downs District Court on Monday, in two separate cases, but all allegedly connected with the murder of Gugulethu police sergeant Xolisa Mlindwa.

They appeared before magistrate Gerald Hattingh, who scheduled a combined bail application for all five for 6 August.

Prosecutor Valley Omar told the court that the application would be opposed. The five were arrested in different areas within the Mfuleni community, and one of two firearms recovered was Mlindwa's service pistol.

In the first case, Thobile Kaptein, 38, and Xolani Mani, 33, both of the Mfuleni township, appeared facing two counts each - the unlawful possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

Both were arrested on the same day, 5 July.

The second case involved Mxolisi Rhulumente, 34, of Mfuleni, Annesly Campher, 26, of Eerste River, and a woman, Faika Davids, 28, also of Mfuleni.

The three alone are charged with the deceased's murder on 30 June, but are also charged with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition - not the same firearm and ammunition involved in the first case.

The three were arrested on 5 July.

Omar told the court that Mani and Rhulumente were both out on parole for an unspecified offence at the time of their arrest.

According to Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana, the deceased's body was found next to his car in Faure Road, Mfuleni, with multiple gunshot wounds, on 30 June.

Mlindwa, 41, was based at the Gugulethu police station.
