Fleeing prisoners kill passer-by

Johannesburg - A woman was killed after four awaiting trial prisoners escaped from police custody while being transported to Mthatha on Wednesday, Eastern Cape police said.

The four men were being taken from Ngquana police station to Mthatha when they overpowered their police escort in Butterworth, said Captain Ernest Sigobe.

"They took three police firearms, and then a woman passer-by was shot and killed," he said.

The four men, awaiting trial for armed robbery and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, escaped between 10:00 and 11:00.

The men stole the police vehicle that was transporting them and later abandoned it in the Tanga area. They then hijacked a passing car and were still being sought by police.

"Police are on a manhunt as we speak, and call on the community to avoid the men because they are dangerous," Sigobe said.
