Johannesburg - A promising young Blue Bull rugby player died at the weekend when robbers making a getaway crashed into his car near Komatipoort.

Nico van Vuuren and the three robbers in the other car died on impact, reported Beeld.

The accident happened at about 17:30 after the robbers’ Nissan 1400 bakkie crashed into Van Vuuren’s Toyota Hi-Rider following their getaway from town where they had robbed the butchery.

“The robbers were speeding away from town, over the stop street and Nico hit them on the side of the bakkie,” said his emotional father, Nico snr.

“My heart is so bitterly sore. My child is dead and he did nothing to deserve it. It is not fair, it’s just not fair.”

His son had played prop and hooker for the Bulls under-21 team and was to have studied for his Bachelors in agriculture next year.

A police spokesperson said R115 000 stolen from the butchery as well as two 9mm pistols were found in the bakkie.

The dead men had apparently been linked to several other crimes in the Lowveld.
