Mbombela - Former human settlements MEC Siphosezwe Masango and two bodyguards are scheduled to appear in the Barberton magistrate's court on Monday on charges of assault and intimidation.

They are accused of attacking motorist Gert van der Merwe, 39, at the Nkomazi Toll Plaza near Malalane on 9 July 2012, after he allegedly warned the guards against driving recklessly.

Van der Merwe opened the charges at Kaapmuiden police station and the case was transferred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate as the bodyguards work under the South African Police Service.

In February, Premier David Mabuza removed Masango as human settlements MEC and appointed Andries Gamede after he found that the department had delivered only 3 900 housing units throughout the province whereas the target was 10 980 for the 2012/2013 financial year.

ANC provincial secretary Lucky Ndinisa said the party would hold an internal investigation against Masango regarding the assault case, but stressed that Masango is innocent until proven guilty.
