Johannesburg - Former North West Health and Social Development MEC Rebecca Kasienyane died on Sunday, the ANC said.

Spokesperson Kenny Morolong said Kasienyane died after a long illness on Sunday.

"The ANC mourns the death of this revolutionary democrat who selflessly committed her entire life to the service of her people. We will remember her for her sound political leadership and maturity and her unflinching passion to improve the lives of our people."

He said Kasienyane was one of the most reliable members of the ANC who carried herself with integrity, dignity, humility, discipline and respect.

"Throughout her political activism, Comrade Rebecca displayed profound qualities of a revolutionary cadre ready to serve the ANC at all material times and conditions as a loyal servant, placing the interests of our movement above her own."

Kasienyane served in government in different capacities including as the ANC provincial treasurer in the North West, Member of Parliament and MEC for health and social development.

At the time of her death, she was a member of the North West provincial legislature and chair of the portfolio committee on economic development and tourism.
