Durban - Police nabbed 14 people in possession of explosives and unprocessed gold near a mine in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said police based in Pongola arrested the suspects and recovered dagga, explosives, two firearms, gold stones, cellphones and bulletproof vests.

"Police received intelligence of suspects who were in possession of unlicensed firearms and explosives at Klipwal Area in Pongola. The information was operationalised and police stormed the identified house near the old Klipwal mine."

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the joint operation by various police units that led to the arrest of the suspects.

"I once again wish to praise members of the community who alerted police to the criminal activities that were taking place in their area. It is only through such proactive co-operation by the community that we can deal a blow to criminal activities," she said.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 32, would appear in the Pongola Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
