Free State man held over murder

2012-08-29 16:02

Bloemfontein - A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of an engineering student in Bloemfontein, police said on Wednesday.

"A thorough investigation by detectives and good relations with the community led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man on Tuesday," Park Road police spokesperson Captain Chaka Marope said.

Franklin Lomo, 23, an engineering student at the Central University of Technology (CUT), was stabbed while walking from shops near the campus to his residential block at CUT on a Saturday evening in July 2012.

Four men approached Lomo, attacked him and took his cellphone. He died from stab wounds to the chest.

Marope said one of the attackers was traced to a construction company in the local Westdene suburb. The man was arrested and positively linked to the Lomo murder.

Police would investigate if he could be linked to similar crimes reported in the area.

Police were confident of making more arrests in the Lomo case.

The man would appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Friday on a charge of murder.
