Johannesburg - An AngloGold Ashanti worker has died from injuries suffered in a mine accident last month, the company said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Alan Fine said Bheki Eric Gama was hurt when a piece of broken rock struck him the face in Kopanang mine in the Free State on September 29.

"Gama received treatment from paramedics on site for the injuries sustained to an eye, and was transferred to hospital."

He underwent ophthalmic surgery last week, but his wound became infected and he died on Monday afternoon.

AngloGold Ashanti extended condolences to Gama's family, friends and colleagues, Fine said.
