Free State police arrest 117
Johannesburg - About 117 people, including alleged illegal gold miners and immigrants, were arrested at the abandoned St Helena Gold Mine and G hostel in Welkom on Friday, Free State police said.
"They were arrested during a joint operation by the police and the SA National Defence Force," Lieutenant Colonel Sam Makhele said.
Over 30 alleged illegal miners were arrested when they were found in the old mine's shafts. Others were arrested at G hostel for being in the country illegally or for having unlicensed firearms.
The illegal immigrants were deported. The rest would appear in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Monday.
