Free State police probe bus crash

Bloemfontein - Free State police were investigating a case of reckless driving after a bus with more than 70 passengers overturned.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Majang Skalkie said the accident happened on the R70, about 2km outside Rosendal in the Eastern Free State, at about 23:30 on Monday.

The bus was carrying 72 people and four children, and was on its way to Johannesburg from Ficksburg.

No one died in the accident, said Skalkie.

She said the driver told police that a tyre had burst and he lost control of the bus before it overturned.

Earlier, paramedics said they found two occupants trapped in the wreckage.

They were freed by technicians using hydraulic equipment.

"The other injured passengers had clambered from the upended bus and were found near it," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

He said 10 people were in a serious condition and the remaining 60 were classified as walking wounded, having sustained only minor injuries.

Skalkie said the injured were treated and stabilised at the scene before they were taken to the Dihlabeng, Senekal and Ficksburg hospitals for further treatment.

People beware when purchasing replacement tyres, there are so many cheap fong kong tyres on the market that are not manufactured for South African road conditions. When driving a vehicle your lives are dependant on the the quality of tyres you have on the vehicle. Wishing all those injured in this accident a speedy recovery. Thank GOD nobody lost their life. Wishing all miles of happy and safe driving.
