Johannesburg - A man has been jailed for life for raping and robbing a 56-year-old woman at Kutloanong in Odendaalsrus, Free State police said on Tuesday.

"Thabang Sefatsa was found guilty as charged by the Welkom Regional Court. He was recently sentenced to life imprisonment," said police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng.

Sefatsa was arrested on 1 October 2011 after he had raped a woman at knife-point in her home.

He stole her jewellery and fled the scene around 03:30.

The woman told police she knew Sefatsa and led them to his home.

He was arrested and charged on the same day.

"On arrival, she pointed to the suspect and the 24-year-old was arrested for rape," Thakeng said.

Free State Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khehla Sitole, said he was proud of how the case had been handled.

He said this would give the public more confidence in the police.

"I believe this case has brought confidence in the public about Odendaalsrus SAPS members because when a case was reported they did not hesitate to arrest the suspect."
