Bloemfontein - Six youths have been arrested in Viljoenskroon in connection with a string of rapes and robberies in the area, Free State police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Sergeant Thabo Litabe said the arrests came after a friend of one of their victims recognised a man in a crowd wearing her hat during a police door-to-door outreach campaign in the town.

Police were notified and the man was questioned. The victim later identified the hat.

The man was arrested on the spot. His alleged accomplices were caught during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Litabe said the town had been plagued by a string of crimes committed by a group of young men since December.

They overpowered couples returning from taverns in the early hours of the morning, threatening them with knives.

They beat up the boyfriends and dragged the women to a local stadium where they would take turns raping them before stealing their valuables.

Litabe said the six, aged between 15 and 21, would appear in the Viljoenskroon Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of rape and robbery.
