Gallery: Zuma's Spear staying up

2012-05-18 11:24

Johannesburg - The Goodman Gallery will not remove a painting of President Jacob Zuma with his penis exposed because that would be censorship.

"We feel it is censorship to take the image down," gallery spokesperson Lara Koseff said on Friday.

The ANC earlier sent the gallery a letter from its lawyers demanding its removal. The ruling party also wants an image of the Brett Murray painting titled The Spear removed from the City Press website.

The newspaper refused, saying it would leave it to a court to decide.

More visitors since ANC statement

Koseff said their attorneys had informed the ANC the painting would stay. The gallery had stuck by its artists during and after apartheid, and still supported them.

Although the opinions of artists were not the gallery's, it welcomed the discussions that accompanied works such as Murray's.

Visitor numbers had increased significantly since the ANC demanded the painting's removal. A guard with a bulletproof vest had been posted at the door as a precaution.

Koseff said the president had not been in to see the work, but Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile had called to express concern. The gallery and the minister had agreed to a meeting to discuss the issue.

Koseff said when she was walking through the gallery before the exhibition opened she thought of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who had been hounded for portraying the Chinese government in a negative light.

‘Other pieces very hard hitting’

"I did think it was fortunate that we are in the position that we are in, that we can have these conversations. But now some of that is reversing."

One of those viewing the exhibition, Bryan Maritz said he had come to see the work as a fan of political satire.

He said although the Zuma painting was "striking", he found Murray's other pieces "very hard hitting".

A father who was there with his 5-year-old daughter said Murray had "balls". He said he had brought his daughter because they were always debating and she was always asking questions.

Asked what she thought of the painting he said: "She just wanted to go for a milkshake."

How's about a painting of Helen Zille with her balls hanging out? She's the only politician that has a pair.

      NrGx - 2012-05-18 12:14

If the anc wish to censor this painting, then they should go to the red location museum in PE and censor the apartheid artwork too. Besides, censoring art??? hech, perhaps the anc should READ the constitution. O wait...I suppose youd require a matric to understand terminology used.

I personally find this picture distasteful. It is neither funny nor does it make any sense.I am surprised that a society where rape and sexual abuse is rife condones such a painting. If this is what the south African society calls art then this a very sick society indeed.I not a Zuma fan but this is not art but utter rubbish and an insult to real artists. The owners of the gallery has lost their marbles to hang suck a sick painting.I find it very disturbing that an artist along will paint something like this. Can you imagine an artist painting Helen zille wearing a suit with her vagina exposed between her legs???? Do you think this same gallery will display such a painting? This is SICK.

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-18 12:33

watsongeorgejan: This is what you call progressive thinking. You did not just take the matter on face value. You thought about it a bit further. I am sure many others have followed this same train of thought, but then, like mist clears before a motorist, saw all the other angles as well. Your father is not on the wall. What we see here is the device that led to so much tax money being diverted from the poor to the rich. More than R1m per child. That caused so much wastage and misery. This is the device that led to workers from Aurora committing suicide, out of desperation. The device that, being relieved of its many obligations, would have allowed the owner to actually do some productive work on behalf of the people of South Africa. It is not just a personal "shame" on display. It is a national one.

      Gordon - 2012-05-18 12:41

No Ndira, not the ANC, but a collective of hundreds of thousands of people and organisations. Something the ANC constantly fails to remember and takes every opportunity to ignore. Art and expression, whether it offends or not, is the cornerstone of a free and open society. What we are getting is a lurch backwards into a quasi 50's Soviet cross with 1850 Zulu culture. The big chief, the grand master cannot be lampooned. Great people can laugh at themselves. Great people understand the purpose of art. Great dictators do not!!! Maybe Julius was on to something

I never knew such an art gallery existed. I will be going this weekend to see what else they have. The website is down, probably due to the traffic it is getting. Lucky google maps has it as 163 Jan Smuts Avenue, PARKWOOD 2193. Thank you ANC for giving us a chance to visits something new :-)

      NrGx - 2012-05-18 12:29

First of wtf are you on (about)! second. this is just how moronic the anc actually is. they are the ones that brought the attention of the artwork to the front page of just about every news house. If they had just kept quiet, accepted it as a piece of art, his "dignity" would be in tact.

      Peter - 2012-05-18 12:42

      Press - 2012-05-18 17:13

Instead Cosatu and the ANC will probably join forces and March to the Goodman Gallery to demand that the painting be taken down - boy its going to be goof fun watching the Goodman staff lying in wait for the cavalcade and pelt them with artistic stones when they get within 50 meters . . . .

  • Bernice - 2012-05-18 11:57

I certainly understand the "TERM - FREEDOM OF EXPRESSING ONE SELF". But who in there honest mind wants to view a flipping painting of the BALD ONE with his DING DONG hanging out. AG NEE SIES MAN.

  • Gail - 2012-05-18 11:57

Although I haven't seen the painting, it sounds most distasteful. Why on earth would ANYONE paint a picture of Zuma, or anyone for that matter with all their "magodies" hanging out? For once I'm on the side of the anc. A picture of a naked body can be artistic...but this sounds gross!!!!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 12:33

Then you fail to get expression art.. This is not simply a drawing.

      Justin - 2012-05-18 13:04

A picture says a thousand words! and in this case, will results in thousands more. I think very apt. Zuma runs this government, like he treats women - he uses his little brain

I want a physical fight between the two races maybe after some beating up, well finally get along. Something like DA and COsatu but without weapons. Please comrade ZUMA make it happen

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 12:33

      Iam - 2012-05-18 13:20

Frank, you are not very bright! The painting is about a CORRUPT president. If all you see is a black man, you are the racist. Would you have considered this to be about race if the person concerned was white as well? Please use Google to find out who the president of South Africa is and try to find a picture as well. Maybe then you will be able to make the connection!

  • Good - 2012-05-18 12:00

The painting is a serious attack on african culture. The painting depicts an elder (zuma) with his genitals showing. There is no way that such depiction of an elder should be acceptable to any self-respecting african.

      Bibi - 2012-05-18 12:02

it is no different than a statue of a naked (white)man. see the symbolism in the painting. We take ourselves far too seriously.

  • Evette - 2012-05-18 12:05

if the Goodman gallery is forced to remove this piece of art because of pressures from our government, then art is dead in this country! everything freedom of expressions stands for will be gone and art will have no meaning or value. Is this what it's coming to?? unpopular speech is censored, but only if it's in the interests of the ruling party? What's next? i know, i know, let's censor it, then burn it!!

@Bulelwa, I would have no problem with my father depicted with his genitals hanging out if that is how an artist viewed my father, that is his expressive art - this is not simply a drawing.

      Byron - 2012-05-18 12:37

no, rocky art has nothing to do with respect - which is why someone can paint a picture of Evette's mom with Julius Malema in a compromising position and she'll praise it as freedom of expression and art with meaning and value

Pathetic attention seeking. Freedom of speech has limits. Can we all now go around drawing pictures of people we don't like with their genitalia exposed and display this in public ? Those who condone this will be the first to wet their pants of a darkie paints and publicly displays a picture of Madam Zille with exposed genitals. Would this courageous artist have done this at the time when Julius and the ANCYL were stilling willing to kill for Zuma ? Doubt it. What the idiots are achieving are to garner support for JZ again, ANC voters alway rally around a leader who is being victimised by whites, especially if they are being publicly insulted and humiliated like this. Take that friggin painting down you idiots.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 12:38

You missed the point, this is not just a simple painting or drawing it is expression art, the picture tells a story... Zuma depicted as a dictator (Malema said it not me) who seems to lack moral fibre (sleeping with unmarried women when he is married to many) etc etc etc.. Look at the painting and try understand the expression in it...

      Con - 2012-05-18 12:51

Pointblank, you can rationalise every single drawing like that, no matter what. Imagine a similar, (maybe even more vulgar, why not, freedom of speech has no limits) picture of HZ with her genitals prominently exposed. It would be the easiest thing in the world to attach some artistic meaning to the picture, especially in traditional Capey vernacular.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 13:00

Again, I would have no problem with a pic of HZ naked with her genitals exposed. Artist Ayanda Mabulu too featured the president's spear in a recent painting. Expression art isn't always understood and I believe your reference to HZ is malicious in turn and not as art..

      Con - 2012-05-18 13:51

So according to you no limits at all on what may be published and what not ? Lets say a very graphic depiction by a white supremacist (or any person for that matter, but just to rub it in a little) of Nelson Mandela fornicating with a mentally handicapped white 5 year old girl can be hung in the middle of downtown JHB and it's OK because some people think it's art ? Cr@p man, there are limits to which public indecency and defamation can be taken.

      Schmee - 2012-05-18 14:36

Unlike JZ, HZ doesn't seem to expose her genitals to many people. Maybe you should have the debate with JZ and tell him to stop with his freedom of exposing.

  • Mike - 2012-05-18 12:27

People lets not play on dangerous ground here. This photo is distasteful and degenerates an ANC leader who also happens to be our president. Hiding behind art to degenerate this leader will not help black and white relations in this country it will only worsen the toxic political environment in the country. Such things can be used by right wing elements in the ANC to take a more serious view on inequality and the race issue which in my view will be bad for anyone who is white in SA

the artist and the gallery owner are racist,if the picture was of verwoerd or paul kruger, they would'nt even hang it,you may hate anyway, but don't direspect him

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 12:40

This has nothing to do with race, it is YOU who is making it so. Your opinion is not fact.

      Schmee - 2012-05-18 14:44

In those days we didn't have the freedom of the press like we have today, so we don't know whether Verwoerd and Kruger fornicated a lot. But if they did and an artist painted them in this way, then the usual verkrampte people would be throwing their toys and the rest of us would be laughing just as much. Unfortunately the many wives and concubines of Zuma is a well-known fact, that is why artists depict him in this way. No wonder the government wants to take that freedom away now. They don’t like it when artists depict the truth.

  • Henry - 2012-05-18 12:30

Shame on the Goodman Gallery. The state president is a man of integrity. Not him nor anyone for that matter. It's high time that the journalist, artists and any citizen should learn to refrain from tha ause of the freedom of expression. In the name of respect, no one in his common sense was supposed to draw and even display such a disgusting image about a man who deserves to be highly respected. Firstly, it was Zapiro, cartooning the president in this unfavourable manner and now some artist drawing and displaying this. I'm personally offended. I wouldn't like it either if it was me. Shame on you, Goodman Gallery.

      jaco.fridaystreet - 2012-05-18 13:03

Zuma a man of integrity and 'deserves to be highly respected', you say? Respect has to be earned, pal. What exactly has he done to earn respect. Integrity? Well, what integrity if he's evading his day in court on more than 700 charges using every trick in the book and lately been heading as state president one of the most corrupt governments on the face of the earth? Integrity, you say. WTF

Zuma's "Spear" is staying up....but its facing down

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 12:41

Polygamy will do that to you...

  • Lourenzo - 2012-05-18 12:37

Zuma is a moron...he got rid of malema who was able to defend him,,,,,look now Jzee

  • Stephen - 2012-05-18 12:40

It looks like his brain is located in a place different to that of most "real,law-abiding men".No wonder the country is in the state its in.He's been using a "traditional weapon" as a Weapon of Mass Penetration.

16 million South Africans voted Zuma into power and just one white person has the nerve to wield a portrait of his genitalia in public. This is a total disrespect for Zuma and his family, the people who voted him into power and most importantly Zuma’s culture. I personally see this as a racial issue and the sooner it is taken out of sight the better. Our constitution is very lenient and i support a call to amend it to deal with disrespectful white people who think they can abuse it. There is too much disrespect perpetuated by white people in this country. Zuma remains a president of the people and he was voted in by millions. If you disrespect him you disrespect the masses. I am annoyed by this white fool.

      Wilweet - 2012-05-18 12:49

please dont make a race issue out of this....really....everything is not black and white. there is simply wrong and right also. read my comment below ....and i am white

      Zing - 2012-05-18 12:51

Get your facts right Mpake. Zuma barely made it over 50% when Mbeki got thrown out. That's how divided the ANC is. Next election he will be out. Even the ANC has had enough of him. I think some of Zuma's rivals started this. Racism? Nope!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 12:51

Actually a black artist beat the white artist already, Artist Ayanda Mabulu too featured the president's spear in a recent painting. Are you going to practise violence on him too?

  • Mashudu - 2012-05-18 12:42

I'm not Zuma's fan but that is disrespect.

  • Wilweet - 2012-05-18 12:45

I am neither an anc nor a zuma supporter, but this is simply wrong. Dont come with the freedom of expression nonsense. Freedom has responsibility and portraying your/our president this way is simply wrong, no matter how much you disagree with him. He was elected in a democratic process that the majority agreed to and he should be respected as president of this country.

Racism in South Africa will never be a history. U like it or u don't this drawing is part of Racism...is that art gallery 4 over 18s if I may ask? How would you feel if that was you and the world have to watch? Even if you are BLACK or WHITE no body have a RIGHT to reveal your private parts by any means without your constent (I wonder how the Journalist know how Jacob Zuma's penis look like)....People this is wrong whether u like it or not...Imagine if that was Hellen Zille, a woman who need honour, how would her boyfriend/kids/family say? Now ja now imagine Zuma's family.....this is racism and nothing to hide, the person who dd that was full of it thats all...(SENDITSHILO)

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 12:52

SO when Ayanda Mabulu too featured the president's spear in a recent painting what did you shout at him? Or are you selective because it is a white guy? Who is racist now?

      Bongiwe Bongie Mabongz Dlutu - 2012-05-18 13:08

If your mind doesn't tell you who is wrong then don't ask me nonsese....I have said it no matter u Black or white not a single person have a right to draw yo private parts...look it in any pespective and try to apply your knowledge, I wont change my opinion

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-18 13:16

A depiction of his private parts doesn't mean they really his private parts. If you are offended by the drawing then you offended, but don't make it what it is not because of YOUR interpretations and opinions..
