Johannesburg - A game ranger appeared in the Ndibana Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for attempted murder after allegedly shooting a fisherman, Mpumalanga police said.

Robert Sibanyoni, 42, was granted R1 000 bail and the matter was postponed to 28 November, police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala said.

Sibanyoni, who works for the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, was on patrol with another ranger on Tuesday when they saw two men fishing illegally in Mkhombo Dam in Vaalbank.

"They approached the men with the aim of effecting an arrest. The fishermen tried to escape."

A shot was fired and one of the men was wounded, said Mohlala.

The injured man was taken to hospital.

Sibanyoni was arrested.
