Newcastle - Robbers operating in a number of vehicles rammed a Fidelity cash-in-transit van outside Newcastle on Tuesday and escaped with a substantial amount of cash, police said.
Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said 15 armed men in three stolen cars ambushed two security vehicles and knocked one off the road where it overturned and burst into flames.
The other security van got away.
After using grinders to open the security van the men escaped in two bakkies with the money, Ngidi said.
No shots were fired, but afterwards police impounded a 9mm pistol and the Mercedes Benz and two BMWs that were used in the heist.
One of the bakkies was found abandaoned along the road, said Ngidi.
