Gang arrested for attack on elderly woman

Johannesburg - Five men have been arrested after robbing an elderly woman of an undisclosed amount of cash and trying to slit her throat in Naboomspruit, Limpopo police said on Monday.

They broke down the door of the 62-year-old woman's house on Saturday night, Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said.

"She screamed for help and wrestled her attackers on the floor. They assaulted the woman with fists and wounded her severely while trying to cut her throat with a razor blade."

The attackers fled after taking the money, a purse and a cellphone. Police caught the them in the area a few hours later.

"The woman is in a serious but stable condition at Mokopane Hospital."

The men were expected to appear in court soon.
