Johannesburg - A gang armed with semi-automatic weapons bombed three ATM machines in Estcourt, in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands, according to a report on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said that in the early hours of Friday morning 15 men attacked a security guard and engaged in a shootout with a security patrol, the Witness reported.
Mac Mkhwanazi, owner of the security company, said the heavily armed gang closed off the entrances to the central business district before bombing ABSA and FNB ATMs in the banks' foyers.
Other eyewitnesses claimed the gang had carried off the spoils of the crime spree in mielie bags.
The crimes were not captured on the municipality's camera network.
An official told the newspaper that the security cameras had not been repaired since they broke down almost two years ago.
