Johannesburg - An ATM was bombed by an armed gang in Bram Fischerville, Soweto, in the early hours of Friday morning, Gauteng police said.

"It was roundabout 02:00 this morning. A group of people driving a Combi and a Golf went to a Spar in Bram Fischerville and planted bombs into an FNB ATM," said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

"The ATM was blown but no money was taken. The blast did not prove effective."

Police were notified by community members and responded to the scene.

"There was a shooting between police and the suspects. We found more than 20 cartridges from AK47s used by the suspects," said Makhubela.

A police car was hit during the shoot-out but no police were injured.

Three men were armed with AK47s and another man with a handgun. A security guard was held at gun point before the bombs were detonated.

Police believe there were other men in the two cars. It was not known exactly how many men formed part of the gang.

Makhubela appealed to the community for any information regarding the incident, with the men being well armed and dangerous.

No arrests have been made.
