Gang caught scamming elderly lady

2010-08-06 18:11
Pretoria - Three women and a man were arrested after they attempted to rob a 77-year-old woman using a scam outside a bank in Silverton on Thursday, police said.

Captain Shawane Sepato said two women approached the woman outside a bank in Silverton and asked her to choose numbers written on a placard.

They told her she had won R65 000 and some groceries and that she had to accompany them to Marabastad in Pretoria to claim the groceries.

The women asked her what she was going to do with the money, and she said she was going to buy a tombstone for her late husband and her in-laws.

She became suspicious at the bank when they told her she had to withdraw all her money from her account, as she will pay more bank fees if the R65 000 was paid in, and spoke to a teller about it.

The teller called the police, who arrested three women, aged 46, 47 and 57 and a 42-year-old man.

Sepato said the suspects had previous cases related to similar crimes against them, but some of the charges had been withdrawn.

He could not say whether they were on bail when trying to rob the woman in Silverton.

The four are expected to appear in court on charges of attempted robbery next week.

"This is a very common crime across Gauteng. We appeal to anybody who were victims of such a crime to contact the Silverton police," said Sepato.
