Durban - A security guard was shot dead and seven others were wounded in a cash-in-transit heist in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.
Superintendent Msawenkosi Mthembu, commander of the Richards Bay organised crime unit, said two SBV vans had been travelling along Nongoma Road when the attack took place.
Each SBV van had four security guards on board.
Mthembu said: "They were surrounded by four cars and the occupants just opened fire on them."
Both SBV vans overturned.
One guard died at the robbery after being shot in the back.
The remaining seven were taken to hospital - some with gunshot wounds and others with injuries from the accident.
Police said the robbers took about R950 000 and six shotguns and fled.
Mthembu said: "Police managed to impound the four cars a short distance away."
No arrests have been made.
