Johannesburg - Ten armed robbers tried and failed to break into a van delivering money to a supermarket in Mabopane, Pretoria police said on Saturday.
The gang hid inside the supermarket, emerging only when the van got there to fill the automatic teller machines (ATMs), said Constable Sarah Lesabane.
The robbers fired a shot then disarmed a guard when he got out of the vehicle to check whether everything was in order before the money was offloaded.
The gang then tried to open the back of the van, but failed and decided to make their getaway instead, fleeing in a Nissan bakkie and a Mazda car. They left a third car, a BMW, at the scene.
Lesabane said they abandoned one of the cars when a tyre was punctured, hijacking a van. The bakkie was later found abandoned in Mabopane.
Police later established that the BMW was hijacked in Moroka, Soweto, earlier this month and the Nissan bakkie in Pretoria last month.
