Gardener, domestic save woman from robbers

2012-07-26 08:38

Bloemfontein - Thanks to the quick thinking of a gardener and a domestic worker, armed robbers were stopped from seriously injuring a 62-year-old Bloemfontein woman and her two domestic workers.

Die Volksblad reported that three armed men stormed into the house of couple Jerry and Yvonne Rossouw.

The men locked up two domestic workers in the bathroom and started assaulting Yvonne in the bedroom, demanding cash.

Meanwhile, gardener Andries Booi, 51, went looking for help while a neighbour’s domestic worker pressed the panic button for their alarm company, activating the armed response.

When the alarm company’s security guards arrived at the house, the armed robbers ran out and fled, resulting in a gunfight in a nearby veld.

Rossouw was admitted to hospital with bruises.

Two cellphones and the keys to the couple’s Opel Astra were taken.

@poloyatonki...till their children get proper education.

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-07-26 09:35

A lot more "wrede & gruweluke" attacks on people in South Africa and its never been just about wanting to have what you and I have, but it looks more and more like deliberate intent on wanting to harm, maim or kill you for the sake of it. Why an inept Government like the ANC,does nothing to protect its people has to be brought to the attention of the UN and the ICC straight away. This is out of control, way to far honestly.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-26 10:05

David, the government only rewards itself.

There are lots of good people out there!95% of the population are good people, it's the 5% that spoil it for everyone.

      Msika - 2012-07-27 08:07

Now this is the Rainbow Nation that the likes of Tutu and Madiba had a vision of...Blacks and whites standing together and helping each other against crime. Well done to everyone who was involved!!

  • jomardl - 2012-07-26 09:11

I think most people are basically good but you wouldn't usually think so reading the papers. Basic human decency doesn't sell as many newspapers as rank depravity.

  • ludlowdj - 2012-07-26 09:11

excellent, only by standing together as communities and neighborhoods will we stand a chance of reducing crime and deterring criminals.

      LanfearM - 2012-07-26 09:42

      Exactly!

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-07-26 10:13

I don't totally agree with that.Part of it YES.However get rid of the cANCer "government",its pathetic justice system and South Africa becomes a much safer place. Corruption free civil servants and politicians, safeguards the integrity of our public service.Vigilante style "your own brand of justice",mob rule and taking matters in your own hands are all tempting offers, but they undermine the rule of Law.

  • gavin.lott.9 - 2012-07-26 09:16

  • hudayfah.newman - 2012-07-26 09:27

Was anyone caught? Shot? No? Yes?

  • blessing.mancitshana - 2012-07-26 09:28

Its good that they did not murder anyone, but the story is not complete. After shooting then what? - police intervention, - thugs arrested, - robbers injured ??????????? That is what l think most of us want to hear as the end of this story. Or the reporter pressed the send button by mistake before rounding up the story!

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-07-26 09:35

It sounds like they got away? These criminals are not known to be brave.

  • carla.l.mclachlan - 2012-07-26 09:32

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-07-26 09:45

Home invasions and rape would stop, immediately, if they were punished with the death penalty. We should all stand together and call for a return of the death penalty for home invasion and rape. Those that fight it have something to hide or a hidden agenda ...

  • wehan.victor - 2012-07-26 09:55

    Well Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ina.cripps - 2012-07-26 11:39

Now this is wonderful! Good news for a change, and one that gives one hope for the future. There is very little that we won't be able to overcome, if we will just stick together, and look after each other. Well done Andries Booi, and Dalena Moerana!

  • Nyiks11 - 2012-07-26 15:10

Our safety is no longer guaranteed I tell you

  • gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-26 17:50

I sincerely hope that these brave employees are provided with some kind of protection for themselves and their family at the very least. I'm just so relieved that nobody was seriously hurt but the employees have families who may be at risk. As their employer I would insist that they place their own family's safety first. What they did was very brave and deserves recognition but not if it costs them their own safety. My gardener and his sister and family would do this for me but I have told them that their children come first. Mine are safely out of the country and will totally understand.

  • Vince.York - 2012-07-26 21:33

Surprised a tragic story of such comparatively MILD violence breaks the news in this country of blood & gore and worse politics.

  • cathygradwell.naude - 2012-07-27 07:44

Well done to the the two workers who responded so positively. These are the kind of people who will make this country work for all its inhabitants!

  • SARealist - 2012-07-27 07:48

A special word of thanks should go out to the team work in activating the panic alarm. I just hope this employers are going to reward their staff and neighbour staff for a job well done. Hoping that there names go forward and is recognised by a medal for bravery from the government.

  • Msika - 2012-07-27 08:10

Great quick thinking from the Gardner and domestic, now give them twice what they've been getting instead of the peanuts they are being paid.

  • Moi - 2012-07-27 08:37

A "feel good" story in the news for a change! Well done to the domestic workers and the gardner! I'm sure the Rossouw's will be forever grateful!
