Johannesburg - A 25-year-old gardener was sentenced to 27 years in prison on Wednesday for hijacking a man in Kempton Park in 2009, Gauteng police said.

Captain Jethro Mtshali said Sifiso Mngomezulu was sentenced 15 years for robbery, five years for attempted murder, five for the unlawful possession of a firearm and two for unlawful possession of ammunition.

"The sentence is an effective 27 years in prison," said Mtshali, explaining that none of the sentences were suspended or would run concurrently.

Mngomezulu was found guilty of hijacking a man at the victim's house in Rhodesfield on April 22 last year.

"He (the victim) was accosted by two suspects, shot in his right hip and the suspects fled with his vehicle, a Toyota Hilux," said Mtshali.

The police followed the suspects to the Oakmoon railway station in Tembisa, where Mngomezulu was arrested.

His accomplice escaped.
