Bloemfontein - A gardener who found a lost cellphone in a pharmacy and did everything in his power to return it to its rightful owner scored a cash reward - and a job - in gratitude for his honesty.

Joseph Myapotse, who works as a gardener in Bloemfontein, told Volksblad how he picked up the BlackBerry in a pharmacy in Langenhovenpark.

He used his own broken cellphone to try to locate the phone’s owner, Tronel Oosthuizen. He eventually got hold of her mother, who put him in touch with her.

Oosthuizen said she knew she had lost the phone in the shopping centre and had retraced her steps to look for it, but it was gone.

“I was convinced it had been stolen,” she said.

Myapotse agreed to keep the phone over the weekend before he was able to return it to her. He wrapped it in toilet paper and kept it locked in his bedside cabinet.

He described it as “very expensive and sjoe, so pretty”, but he knew the right thing to do was to return it to its rightful owner.

“My dad always taught me never to steal. He said the Lord would be good to me if I was good to others.”

A delighted Oosthuizen rewarded him with R100 – and a job on Saturdays, working in her garden.
