Johannesburg - Registration for the 2015 academic year at public schools in Gauteng ends on Tuesday, the education department said.

"Starting the admissions process early affords us ample time to plan adequately for learners coming in 2015," Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said.

The department's plan included providing adequate school infrastructure, pupil and teacher support material, and furniture, Lesufi said.

There were more than 2 000 public schools in the province accommodating 1.9 million pupils.

"We would like to thank all parents for co-operating during the registration period," he said.

"Your timeous response will enable us to ensure all our schools are ready to operate from the first day of school in 2015."

Lesufi said the department would explore ways to improve the admissions system.

Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said the department was committed to complying with its constitutional obligation to place all applicants in public schools.

"This means that the department will assist parents with late applications.

"Applying late reduces the chances of parents getting the school of their first choice where they meet the criteria," Sekhonyane said.

Pupils would be placed at schools with available space, which might not be close to where their parents worked or lived.
