Johannesburg - A policeman was arrested on Friday hours after he allegedly shot dead his girlfriend and another man in Mabopane, north of Pretoria, Gauteng police said.

On Thursday night, the 27-year-old constable went to the 21-year-old woman's house and found another man there, Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

The policeman kicked down the door and allegedly assaulted the man, after which a case of malicious damage to property was laid against him.

Around 07:00 on Friday, the policeman returned to the woman's house and another argument broke out.

"He took out his service pistol and fired shots [at] both the victims and fled the scene."

Mogale said both the woman and the 25-year-old man were killed.

Fled

The policeman fled in a red state Chevrolet Aveo, but was arrested in Potgietersrus, Limpopo.

Gauteng police had alerted authorities in both Limpopo and Mpumalanga to be on the look-out for the man.

"Police found in his possession his service pistol and recovered the state vehicle he was travelling in."

He would appear in Soshanguve Magistrate's Court on Monday.
