Johannesburg - A 26-year-old off-duty police constable shot and killed his 33-year-old girlfriend in De Deur, 35km south of Johannesburg, before turning the firearm on himself early on Saturday morning, Gauteng police said.

"It is alleged that at about 02:30, the constable visited the girlfriend who was attending the funeral night vigil of her uncle," said Tshisikhawe Ndou in a statement.

After arriving at the house, the policeman and his girlfriend began arguing.

"The man took out his service pistol and fatally shot her. He then turned the gun on himself and also died on the scene," said Ndou.

Ndou said police had opened inquest and murder dockets, and were investigating.

How many more cops need to kill their own family before the SAPS realise there is a massive problem with their members' mental states and stress? How often do the SAPS review their members' mental state and ability to carry weapons?

Why are off duty cops armed anyway? Not like they will respond to any crimes when they are off duty. Hell they cant even respond when on Duty.

This should be a red flag to the C.O.s that there is a serious problem in the police force and it seems the violent solutions they are using at work are now being used as the solution to domestic problems. Very worrying and high time this was investigated.
