Johannesburg - Emergency teams are assessing the damage caused by severe weather conditions in Gauteng on Thursday, the provincial government said.

"The disaster management teams in the affected municipalities are working around the clock to ensure that the families that were affected by the bad weather conditions get the necessary relief, more especially those who have been displaced as a result of the storm," Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said in a statement on Friday.

Rain and hail damaged house roofs, shattered windows, and caused ceilings to cave in late on Thursday afternoon.

The worst affected areas were Soshanguve, Mamelodi and Hammanskraal in Tshwane; Bekkersdal and Kagiso on the West Rand; and parts of Ekurhuleni, said Mokonyane, who visited Kagiso on Friday.

"Those that need temporary accommodation in Kagiso will be housed at the Kopanong community centre where they will receive food packs and blankets until the necessary repairs to their homes have been made," she said.
