Johannesburg - Over R12m has been spent buying new
equipment and filling vacancies at two hospitals in Gauteng, the provincial
health department said on Thursday.
The Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital received R10m
worth of new equipment, said department spokesperson Simon Zwane.
It included cardiac monitors, thoracoscopy sets, a
paediatric bronchoscopy, a laparoscopic camera system, and blood warmers.
The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital would
receive new equipment early next year, he said.
"Charlotte Maxeke has also been assisted to employ
about 250 nurses, doctors as well as administration and support staff."
Zwane said the new staff consisted of 150 nurses and 56
doctors.
The outlay was part of efforts to improve Gauteng health
services.
"All hospitals are under instruction to improve the
attitude of staff, ensure cleanliness, improve waiting times, patient safety,
infection control and availability of medicines and equipment," Gauteng
health MEC Hope Papo said in a statement.
Zwane said the appointment of anaesthesiologists and
nurses at the Steve Biko hospital, in Pretoria, had ensured the reactivation of
three theatres and intensive care units.
