Johannesburg - The SPCA said on Friday that a man had been found guilty in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court of animal abuse.

Senior inspector Jaco Pieterse said that the court sentenced Christopher Dennis Maile, 45, to a fine of R3 000 or six months imprisonment, with a further six months imprisonment suspended for five years.

Maile was also declared unfit to own or be in possession of any animal for five years.

Pieterse said he laid charges of animal cruelty against Maile in 2011 after a female Boerboel-cross dog was found with severe vaginal prolapse the size of a soccer ball.

"No medical treatment had been provided and the animal was left to suffer in agony for more than 10 days," said Pieterse.

"The State fails to understand why Maile did not seek assistance for the dog," prosecutor Lourain Kgaditsi said during the court proceedings.
