Johannesburg - A man was shot and killed, and a police officer was injured, after an armed robbery in Kagiso, outside Krugersdorp west of Johannesburg, on Saturday, Gauteng police said.

"It is alleged that the police responded to a complaint of armed robbery and attempted murder in Soul City informal settlement where a bakery was robbed by two armed suspects," said Lieutenant -Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou.

The two men were fleeing the scene when police arrived. The police pursued the men, who shot at police, and a shoot-out ensued.

One of the men was shot and killed while a police officer was shot in the hip. The other man escaped.

The officer was taken to hospital where he remained in a stable condition, said Ndou.

"We are currently investigating cases of attempted murder, armed robbery and an inquest," he said.
