Johannesburg - Motorists and road users were urged to exercise caution in the rainy weather, the Gauteng traffic police said on Tuesday.

"The roads and freeways are wet, slippery and dangerous," said spokesperson Obed Sibasa.

There had been a number of accidents because of the weather conditions.

"We advise drivers to switch on headlights for them to see and for other road users to see approaching vehicles."

Meanwhile, Travel24 reports that a Mango flight from Cape Town to Lanseria was diverted to OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday afternoon due to adverse weather.

Motorists were also urged to reduce their driving speeds, to slow down in built-up areas, to keep safe following distances, and to look out for pedestrians crossing the road.

The SA Weather Service said more rain and possible flooding was expected in parts of the country, including Gauteng, in the coming days.

Forecaster Jacqueline Riet said that rainfall was expected to decrease around Friday and Saturday, but that rainfall would continue on Sunday.
