Cape Town - The extradition case of convicted Serbian assassin Dobrosav Gavric was postponed in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Magistrate Zwelidumile Sogwagwa said the case would resume on August 30 as he was still awaiting an outcome from the Standing Committee of Refugee Affairs.

Gavric, 38, allegedly entered the country illegally, under a false name.

The Serbian applied for political asylum, but this was refused. He then appealed this decision with the Refugee Appeal Board.

Extradition proceedings hinged on whether his appeal was upheld or dismissed. The court heard the investigation into alleged fraud was complete.

He was ordered to remain in custody and limped back to the cells with heavy security around him.

Gavric fled Serbia to escape a 35-year prison sentence for a triple murder. One of his victims was a Serbian "warlord" known as Arkan.

Gavric apparently entered South Africa in 2007 under the false name and passport of Sasa Kovacevic.

He used this alias to apply for a driver's licence in September 2009, and to identify himself to the Sandton police in December 2009.

The Serbian faces five fraud charges, one contravention of the Immigration Act, and a charge relating to illegal possession of a 9mm Glock pistol.
