Cape Town - Fund raising has begun for a shelter in Cape Town for members of the gay and lesbian communities, organisers announced this week.
Spokesperson Glenn de Swardt said the shelter that would provide safe short-term accommodation for people experiencing a crisis.
It would also be open to bisexuals and transgender individuals.
The fund raising had kicked off with a R50 000 donation from the Cape Town Pride Festival.
De Swardt said many existing shelters in the city were affiliated to faith-based organisations that were frequently not gay-friendly.
The newly-formed Pride Shelter Trust would attempt to raise a R1m within three years for the project.
