Bloemfontein - Danish national Peter Frederiksen sat with his back turned to a packed public gallery in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where he was expected to apply for bail.

Frederiksen, wearing green pants and a maroon fleece top, sat with his legs crossed and his spectacles around his neck, while dozens of African National Congress Women's League members lined the benches behind him.

He held a piece of paper in his hands, often glancing down at his notes. Next to him on the court bench was a yellow plastic bag.

"The reason we are here is to make sure he doesn't get bail, we are here to make sure that justice is served. As a matter of fact we want him to rot in jail. We are hurt, we are sad, we are embarrassed and humiliated as women," said ANCWL member Joyce Davids.

"We are not xenophobic but we fail to understand - why would somebody come from Denmark and do this nonsense in our country?"

Frederiksen, whose case has made international headlines, was arrested after 21 clitorises were found in his freezer. He allegedly sliced off the sexual organs and kept them in the freezer as trophies.

His wife, Anna Matseliso Molise, 28, who assisted the police with information about him, was last month shot dead in her home country of Lesotho, in what the Hawks described as a suspected hit.

She reportedly refused to be placed in a witness protection programme.

The couple has two children.

Frederiksen faces charges of sexual assault as well as charges related to crimes committed under sections of the Medicines Act.
